Data Centers represent an essential infrastructure for data storage, processing, and management, supporting indispensable services such as cloud computing, streaming, e-commerce, and financial transactions.
In the context of digital transformation, these systems are fundamental in enabling emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and process dematerialization.
However, Data Centers also constitute a high-risk critical infrastructure, both due to the need to ensure business continuity and their environmental impact.
At VINCI Energies Building Solutions Italia, we have developed an advanced infrastructure complex, including mechanical, electrical, and special systems, as well as the construction of rack islands, for an Edge Data Center located in the province of Milan, designed for a client in the telecommunications sector.
Project Objectives and Development
The objective of the project was to create a fully redundant Data Center, ensuring high reliability, energy efficiency, and future scalability.
Operational continuity and energy efficiency were the two key drivers in the design of the Data Center’s systems. To minimize downtime and mitigate the risk of interruptions, we adopted a design aimed at eliminating Single Points of Failure (SPoF). At the same time, a focus on optimizing operational costs and sustainability guided the choice of high-efficiency equipment, with the goal of balancing the infrastructure’s consumption against that of computing machines, a parameter measured through the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) indicator.
Ensuring high standards of continuity and efficiency requires constant commitment to maintaining top quality at all stages, from construction to operation.
This has been one of the main strengths of VINCI Energies Building Solutions Italia in this project.
Technical Solutions Implemented
To achieve reliability and performance objectives, advanced technological solutions were implemented:
- 1,250 kVA Redundant Power Supply System
The Data Center was designed with a redundant power supply system, including 300 kVA Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and 1,250 kVA emergency generators, ensuring operational continuity even in case of a main power grid blackout. - 1 MW Advanced Cooling System
A highly energy-efficient, fully redundant cooling system was adopted, featuring precision air conditioning units and cold aisle containment for optimal thermal management of the Data Center. - Security and Monitoring
The Data Center is equipped with advanced security systems, including video surveillance, access control, and fire detection, along with a 24/7 monitoring system to ensure constant and continuous operational oversight. - Scalable Architecture
The structure was designed with a scalable architecture, allowing for future expansions and upgrades without significant impacts on operational activities.
Conclusion
The Data Center project developed by VINCI Energies Building Solutions Italia focuses on balancing reliability, energy efficiency, and security.
The full redundant architecture ensures operational continuity, while energy efficiency optimization guarantees sustainability and reduced operational costs. Thanks to a scalable design and cutting-edge technological solutions, this infrastructure is ready to support the data processing and storage needs of our client, reinforcing VINCI Energies Building Solutions Italia’s position as a partner for the development of next-generation critical infrastructures.
